Storage in Munich — when there is a gap between moving out and moving in

Interim storage is not an edge case in Munich; it is a consequence of a tight housing market. The old tenancy ends at the end of the month, the new flat is free from the fifteenth, and 30 cubic metres have to go somewhere in between. We plan for that from the start, so your furniture is only dismantled once and stays reachable in storage in case you do need something.
What does furniture storage in Munich cost?
The price follows volume and duration, so it is always quoted individually — unlike the moving services themselves, there is no meaningful published range here. What drives it: the cubic metres, the number of months, whether the goods sit in their own bay or share one, and whether you need access in between. Tell us volume and period and you get a figure.
How does a move with interim storage work?
It is loaded twice — and that is exactly where the cost is decided. On the day you move out we load so the consignment can stand in storage as one unit and needs no sorting on delivery. Furniture is dismantled once and stays dismantled. Whatever you will need in the meantime we mark beforehand and store accessibly — the box with the winter clothes at the front, not behind the wardrobe.
How long can goods be stored?
From a few days to several months. Short storage over one or two weeks is the most common case and usually straightforward. From about three months it is worth reviewing the contents first: what stands in storage for a quarter without anyone missing it often does not move back in afterwards either. For longer storage we therefore regularly plan a clearance alongside.
How are the goods secured in storage?
Dry, locked and protected against unauthorised access. The liability distinction matters: for transport, the statutory removal-contractor liability under § 451e HGB applies at 620 euro per cubic metre of loading space. For the storage itself, the terms of the storage contract apply, which we hand you with the quote. Anyone storing valuable furnishings for longer should talk to us about additional insurance at a declared value.
What should not go into storage?
Anything that spoils, can leak or attracts damp: food, open liquids, paints and solvents, candles in summer. Likewise documents, jewellery and cash — those belong with you, not in a warehouse. Electronics store well as long as they stay dry; batteries are better removed, because they can leak over months.

Can I reach my things during storage?
By arrangement, yes. Tell us at loading what you are likely to need — then it goes in at the front and is reachable in minutes rather than an hour. Spontaneous access without notice is not the same at a managed furniture store as at a self-storage unit; if you need daily access, self-storage is the better fit, and we will say so.
Managed storage or self-storage?
Self-storage pays when you need constant access and want to load and unload yourself. Managed storage pays when you do not: we load, store, deliver on your date and carry it back in. For the classic gap between moving out and moving in, the managed option is almost always the cheaper total, because with self-storage both transports fall back on you.

What nobody misses for a quarter rarely moves back in. A clearance before storage is then usually cheaper than the storage.
What does a move in Munich cost?
A move in Munich typically costs between 450 – 850 € for one room and 2.400 – 4.500 € for a house of 140 to 200 square metres. The price comes from the volume in cubic metres, the crew and time needed, the distance, the floor and the carrying distance. Other companies give you these numbers on the phone. We put them here.
Rule of thumb for volume: roughly 0.3 to 0.5 m³ of goods per square metre of living space. A 70 m² flat comes to about 21 to 35 m³. Sparsely furnished tends to the lower figure; a full cellar and attic to the upper one.

All figures are market orientation values for Munich and the surrounding area — not offers. Your binding fixed price follows a short survey on site or by photo and video; the fixed-price survey service costs 290 €. Additional scope is charged only after prior agreement, never sprung on you on moving day.
On Sundays and public holidays: § 9 ArbZG prohibits employing staff on Sundays and public holidays outside the licensed exceptions. Sunday and holiday jobs are therefore only possible by arrangement and only where the law allows — at double rate.

Common questions about storage
What does storage cost per month?
It depends on volume and duration and is quoted individually. Unlike the move itself we publish no range here, because without cubic metres and months it says nothing. Give us both on the phone and you get a figure in the same conversation.
How many cubic metres will I need to store?
The same volume as for the move: 0.3 to 0.5 m³ per square metre of living space. A 70 m² flat is 21 to 35 m³. If you are storing only part of it, count proportionally — a kitchen alone is rarely more than 5 m³, a complete bedroom about 8 to 12 m³.
Are my goods insured while in storage?
For transport, statutory liability of 620 € per cubic metre under § 451e HGB applies. For the storage period, the terms of the storage contract apply, which you receive with the quote. For valuable furnishings ask us about additional insurance at a value you declare — that is the more common recommendation for longer storage.
Can you deliver to more than one address?
Yes. That is the normal case with separations and inheritances, where a household is divided. We mark at loading what goes where and deliver separately. Each additional destination costs another journey, itemised in the quote.
How short notice can storage be arranged?
Short notice works if capacity is free — nobody calls three weeks ahead when a handover falls through. Tell us as early as you know, even if nothing is certain yet. Reserved space that turns out not to be needed is easier to cancel than space that does not exist.
Do you store company inventory?
Yes, and on company moves it is common: the new site is still being fitted out while the old lease runs out. Archives are stored sealed and in order, so they can go back on the shelves in the same sequence at the new site.
What if the move-in date shifts?
Then storage runs longer. Tell us as soon as you know — delivery is an appointment with a vehicle and a crew, and it is easier to move with notice than the day before. A shift is not a breach of contract; it costs the extra storage days.
Can I book the move and the storage separately?
You can, but it rarely pays. When both run from one place, it is planned once instead of twice, and the consignment does not have to be re-sorted in storage. Booked separately you pay the extra setup time and usually another journey.
